At Greenshaw, our main aims are to embed healthier eating habits and encourage more social interaction between students at meal times. To support these aims, we encourage students to make healthier meal choices and to sit and eat their meals with their peers. All food is freshly baked or steamed, we no longer fry any of our food. We have several water coolers in each dining area and encourage all students to bring reusable water bottles and fill them during break times so that they keep well hydrated throughout the day.

Our catering team, as part of the GLT catering team of schools, has successfully achieved the 'Food for Life Served Here' bronze accreditation. This is an independent endorsement supported by annual inspections. It’s a wonderful way to showcase that our school is committed to providing healthy meals, enriching lunchtimes, and delivering food education that positively impacts our students and the broader community.

The scheme aims to encourage and reward caterers who:

  • serve fresh, high-quality food
  • source environmentally sustainable and ethically produced ingredients
  • make healthy eating accessible and enjoyable.

We have a split lunchtime, with Years 7 and 8 on the first sitting and Years 9, 10 and 11 on the second. All of our Year 7 and Year 8 students sit down to eat their lunch together. All three of our dining spaces offer an inspirational space for students to eat and socialise in. More students than ever are choosing to eat in school at lunch time, as well as taking advantage of the excellent breakfast, break-time and after school service.

A main meal costs £2.40. As part of the school's response to Covid-19, students are split into year group 'bubbles' at break and lunch time. All kitchen staff also wear a face shield during food preparation and service.

If a student has a special dietary requirement, parents should inform the school in writing so that any necessary arrangements can be made. All food is clearly labelled with allergen advice.

The cafeterias are open at break time, lunch time and after school from Monday to Friday.

Students living close to the school with a parent at home to receive them may request home lunches. No students, apart from those who have a lunch pass, are free to leave the school premises during the lunch period. Applications for students to do so on a particular day must be made by parents in writing.

MCAS cashless system

The school operates a cashless catering system using a payment card. For security reasons, the daily spending limit for all students is set at £6.00. This can be increased if requested. Each student has their own account and money can be added by logging onto the school website and making a payment online using a credit or debit card.

We have introduced a more convenient way to pay for school meals, trips, after school clubs and much more online, using a secure service called MCAS

Unique MCAS account activation details have been communicated to parents/carers. If you have any queries, please take a look at our MCAS page here.

Free school meals

The free school meal entitlement is £3.10. It is credited to the student’s lunch account on a daily basis. This amount can only be spent on that day at lunch time, it is not available for break. (NB. Any unspent allowance will not be transferred to the following day). More money can be added to the student’s account by the method mentioned above.

The Greenshaw Learning Trust has signed up to a new Free School Meals System. The system automatically checks HMRC, The Department for Work and Pensions and The Home Office websites. Parent/carer’s only need to sign up once and then the system checks regularly for any changes in your circumstances during your child’s time at Greenshaw High School. You can find out more about the new system here.

Healthy eating

To support these aims, we encourage students to make healthier meal choices and to sit and eat their meals with their peers. All food is freshly baked or steamed, we no longer fry any of our food. We have also installed additional water coolers. This will encourage all students to bring reusable water bottles and fill them during break times so that they keep well hydrated throughout the day.

All three of our dining spaces are freshly decorated and offer an inspirational space for students to eat and socialise in.

Parents/carers can view the meal choices that students have made through their MCAS account, allowing them to have a conversation regarding their choices. With guidance from home and at school, we hope to improve the way students are eating and the habits they form.
