Homework
We absolutely believe that homework has a significant part to play in our students developing independence and a strong work ethic. We particularly want homework that:
-
Enables students to consolidate and reinforce their skills and understanding, particularly in literacy and numeracy.
-
Can become part of the family routine; developing positive study skills and habits that will serve students well throughout life.
-
Is likely to be completed, which means getting the difficulty and interest level right so that students can complete this independently.
-
Builds an effective partnership between home and school and enables parents to be involved in their child's education.
As students progress through the school, the amount of homework each week increases and the nature of the homework will reflect the stage they have reached. In the lower school, there is a focus on knowledge and establishing a routine of completing homework on time and to the required standard. In the upper school, the focus shifts to extending the knowledge gained in the classroom and applying this in different ways.
Homework in Years 7 and 8 is completed Monday to Thursday, leaving the weekend free for other activities. In Years 10 and 11, homework is set Monday and due the following Monday, giving students autonomy to decide how to manage their time. Year 9 is a mix of both systems, reflecting the transitional nature of the year. Thus, homework helps our students build positive independent learning habits which support their future success.
All homework is set on Frog and from there, students can access the resources required to complete the homework. Consequently, students must be able to access the internet from home. If this is an issue, families should contact the Head of Year for support.
If students are struggling with homework, they should speak to their tutor or class teacher. SEND homework club runs every Tuesday after school.
Homework is the responsibility of all parties: students, family and school. Where homework is not completed, students will be detained on a Friday night to discuss the issue and seek to remedy it. Teachers will phone home to discuss homework issues and parents will be expected to attend a homework meeting at school if the issue persists.
