Greenshaw High School

New Head Students are appointed

Our new Head Students and Deputy Head Students have been chosen for next year.

We are looking forward to ending the school year with our Enrichment Days on Monday and Tuesday. Some students are heading off site, some learning in school. The off-site days include visiting the Science Museum and collecting data on the coast, and on-site include professional actors performing GCSE texts and assault courses.

We hope that all families know and understand where their child(ren) should be each day. This has already been circulated by e-mail to all families. In addition, we will be sending a personalised text message to all families at 4.00pm on Sunday 21st July, reminding them about the time and location for Monday 22nd July. We will then be doing the same again on Monday afternoon at 4.00pm, reminding families about the location of any activities on Tuesday 23rd July.

Should there be any uncertainty, our phone switchboard will be open from 7:30am on Monday morning, but I feel confident that the e-mails and text messages should be sufficient. I wish all the students, and the staff, two very enjoyable days of learning.

Head Students and Deputy Head Students

One of the toughest things we do at the end of the school year is appoint the Head Students for the following year. They should embody our school values of kindness and hard work and be role models for others. The reason that this is so difficult is that there are so many superb students in Year 12, going into Year 13 from September, to choose from.

For the next school year, I am delighted that our Head Students will be Shayanth and Nana, and that our Deputy Head Students will be Lilly and Danyal. I look forward to working with them over the next two terms in particular, before they focus in summer 2025 on their final A Level exams.

A win for Greenshaw… just!

Our return chess fixture against the pupils of Oaks Park, away this time, was concluded last week with Greenshaw winning by one point. Well done to Saket, Kuveeshan, Andrei, Thirushanth, Puvikganth, Krishang and Nilakshan for your efforts in a very hard-fought match. This does mean that we end the school year with an unbeaten record in our chess matches. Let us see what the next year brings!

Minor alteration to the school day for September

This will probably mean little to most families, but as of September we will be running afternoon registration for Year 7, 8 and 9 until 14:15 on a Wednesday only. This means that for students in current Year 7 and 8, progressing into Years 8 and 9, they will finish five minutes later than this year, on a Wednesday only. We will change this timing on the school website over the next week or so, but as I say, this should present no issues for students or families.

The building work continues to progress well, which means that the temporary accommodation will start developing over the summer break. In turn, this means that the amount of outdoor space available for PE lessons will be reduced. Miss Graham and Mr Fuller, the Head and Deputy Heads of PE have been looking for local sports centres that we could use off site. Brilliantly, they have been able to secure excellent facilities – and specialist instructors, for example in swimming – that will be better than our current on-site facilities. This will mean that every other week some of our current Year 7 students (next year’s Year 8) will return to school about an hour later on a Tuesday. Miss Wiffill will write to families, along with the PE team, to explain these movements in more detail. These off-site lessons will only be happening for Year 7 and 8 students from September. There will be no changes for other year groups.

Sparx Learning - Maths

As families will know, some of our homework is based on practice, which is especially important for subjects like maths. The following students have earned the most XP points in Sparx Maths over the last 12 months. These points are based on consistent effort, day after day, and we are very proud of the following students for being the highest in their year: Keziah (Year 7), Minej (Year 8), Puvikganth (Year 9), Cyrus (Year 10) and Sanmi (Year 11).

Students of the term

Congratulations to these students that have embodied all the values of our school. Their hard work and endeavours have seen them achieve well, and we are very proud of their achievements. Well done all!

Screentime use, social media and gaming – what parents/carers need to know

We take all aspects of our educational responsibility seriously, not just the academic curriculum but also areas relating to health and wellbeing. One of our key partners is the Education Wellbeing Service, a group of NHS health professionals working in schools with our pupils and staff.

If you are interested, there is an Education Wellbeing Service webinar that talks about the relationship between mental health and different forms of screen time. The team will explore some myths and some science, and share tips about how to think about and support your teen with their use of screen time. To sign up for one of these live webinars (31.07.2024 7.00-8.00pm or 01.08.2024 12.30-1.30pm) please use this link: Secondary/College Parents -Workshops | Eventbrite.

I will spend my Sunday night thinking about my trip to the beach on Monday. I have been told I will observe geographical processes, as well as consider manmade features including the pier and what the makeup of the local high street can tell us about Worthing. While I cannot wait for Monday to arrive, I hope we all have restful weekends in the meantime.
