Preparing for lower school sports day
Our lower school annual Athletics Championships will take place at the David Weir Leisure Centre on Tuesday 2nd July.
Open Evening
Thursday night saw our annual Open Evening and I would like to thank the many, many students who supported the school. We had hundreds of students acting as tour guides, helping out in subject departments, running demonstrations in art and science, and playing sports. I would like to extend particular congratulations to our two students, Berken and Elakya. These two students in Year 7 spoke to over 2,000 visitors over four speeches during the evening – a fantastic achievement at the start of Berken and Elakya’s secondary school career.
Sutton Food Bank
I am very proud that our school seeks to play a significant role in the local area, supporting community events. We are collecting food for the Sutton Food Bank next week, taking donations of tinned foods, dried goods and any non-perishable items that will then be taken directly to the Food Bank. If you are shopping this weekend and are able to add one more item to your trolley, we will be collecting these at the gate for each year group on Monday morning. Thank you in advance for anything you are able to contribute.
Hot weather passing?
We started this week with a couple of warmer days. Some classrooms were hotter than others, and we have the capacity (now that Year 11 and Year 13 have finished their courses) to re-room groups where necessary. However, as the forecast is for temperatures in the low twenties next week, it is unlikely that this will be needed in the coming days.
For clarity, students in Years 7 to 10 are not required to wear jumpers between now and the end of the summer term. You may be interested to know that many have chosen to continue to do so, even on Tuesday – the hottest day of the term. It is not helpful for learning that students have hand-held electric fans during lessons as we will seek to swap out of any classroom that becomes extremely hot for the remainder of the summer term. It is fine to have fans in the playground, but we will ask students not to have them out during lessons.

Sports Day for Year 7 and 8 – Tuesday 2nd July
Our lower school annual Athletics Championships will take place at the David Weir Leisure Centre on Tuesday 2nd July. All students in Year 7 and 8 should meet at the Arena at 8:15am and report to their Tutor/Head of Year for registration. All students should arrive wearing their full Greenshaw PE kit, which includes Greenshaw branded polo top, overtop, bottoms, white sports socks and suitable trainers.
All of our students attend the Championship, whether they are directly involved in an event or not. Everyone will have an active part to play, whether competing or cheering the competitors on. The competition will start promptly at 8:45am with the results being announced at around 2:00pm. Students will then be dismissed from the David Weir Leisure Centre around 2:15pm.
During the competition, students should ensure they have a large water bottle and something to eat. Sun cream and a hat will also be required should the weather be hot. I wish good luck to all the competitors in every event and anticipate a very noisy and supportive crowd!
Following up on lateness to school
This is a reminder that we close the school gate at 8:28am and all students are expected in their registration rooms by 8:30am. From Monday 1st July we are introducing a new follow-up for the small number of students who might be late. Unauthorised lateness to school will lead to loss of social time at break and/or lunch and require students to remain after school for up to an hour on that day. Thank you for your support.
Wishing you all a happy and restful weekend.
