History
What is the course about?
History is much more than a study of the past. History is fascinating and exciting. It offers an invaluable insight into present events and equips students with vital transferable skills which are increasingly sought by universities and employers. Many of the topics we study are very different from our own experiences and yet they have been very influential in shaping the world in which we live. Studying history provides us with the skills, the knowledge and the understanding to successfully navigate the modern world and to understand our place in it.
Course content
- Unit 1: The Tudors: England, 1485–1603
- Unit 2: Revolution and dictatorship: Russia, 1917–1953
- Unit 3: Germany 1848-1934
Assessment
- Unit 1 – written exam 2½hrs (40%).
- Unit 2 – written exam 2½hrs (40%).
- Unit 3 – coursework - 4,500 words (20%).
Career pathways
Employers and universities look for students who have a solid understanding of current issues, can communicate effectively, argue coherently and can interpret a range of documents. History A Level gives you these skills and marks you out as a well-educated and high achieving student. It is an excellent foundation for a wide range of occupations including law, journalism, marketing, banking, business consultancy, teaching, accountancy, leisure management, information systems and the civil service.
Entry criteria
Minimum of grade 6 in GCSE History.
